The Slip Inn is a true hidden gem tucked away down Clementhorpe between Bishy Road and the river.
A classic back street local, the pub has a long and rich history, taking its name from the historic slipway which ran along the street outside its front door down to the now long disappeared boat yard on the River Ouse.
Thankfully the pub now also has a bright future following its sale by a major pub chain to a partnership of local residents. Paul Crossman (landlord of the nearby Swan pub) and his wife Sarah, teamed up with friends Jon and Julie Farrow to purchase the freehold to the pub, and they are now running The Slip Inn as the newest genuine free house in York.
The ethos is similar to that of The Swan, with the emphasis firmly on quality cask ale which can be enjoyed in a relaxed and sociable atmosphere, but this is no mere carbon copy as the Slip Inn has a character all of its own with its cosy, warm and intimate multi-roomed interior.
The new owners have already begun a major program of alterations with some improvements to the internal layout which have included the addition of a new room to the rear. However they do not plan on stopping there as they have secured planning permission for a major extension to the rear of the building which will incorporate a dining area and kitchen as well as a brand new toilet block, and, excitingly for all real ale fans, a new purpose built microbrewery. So watch this space!
The Slip Inn is a proud supporter of the many local craft brewers working in our region, and this is reflected in the carefully chosen ales which are available on the bar. They have three regular beers which are:
Leeds Pale at 3.8% - the best selling beer - a superb pale ale brewed in Leeds for fans of a refreshing lighter pint.
Wold Top Falling Stone at 4.2% - an excellent premium best bitter brewed on a family-owned farm on the Yorkshire Wolds near Filey.
Rudgate Ruby Mild at 4.4% - an absolutely delicious darker beer brewed near York in Tockwith. The current Champion Beer of Britain as voted by CAMRA at the 2009 National Beer Festival.
In addition there is always one guest ale, showcasing the work of the best of our other regional brewers.
Complementing this great range of real ale is a selection of premium draught products including Staropramen, Becks Vier, Stella 4%, Westons Stowford Press cider and of course Guinness.
You will also find a unique selection of fine house wines, specially chosen from smaller producers as well as a range of specialist bottled beers and ciders, premium spirits and an expanding collection of single malts.
There is a large yard to the rear of the pub which will be perfect for the warmer weather to come, and which will be playing host to a beer festival (held jointly with The Swan) later this year.
The Slip Inn is a family friendly pub, with children being welcome in the rear part of the pub until 8pm. Well behaved dogs (on a lead) are also most welcome.
