Song Box is a much-loved, local, independent musical play group, created here on South Bank by Thea Jacob back in 1994. Thea began her first musical play session, for 0-4 year olds with their mums and dads, in Room 1 at Southlands Church. Just a career break activity while her boys were small? 20+ years on and we are still here, and have grown to become so much more!
Today Song Box delivers 7 groups each week at Southlands plus many more all over the city, delivered by a brilliant team of experienced session leaders. “We love the group! It's the best thing we've tried. Izzy sings all the way home!” Sara Mair, Sep 2014
As well as term-time sessions, our families enjoy Thea's unique holiday programmes of interactive musical visits to York's many attractions: Holgate Windmill, St Nicholas Fields Environment Centre, The Yorkshire Museum, York Art Gallery and University of York's Gamalan orchestra, to name but a few. “Another visitor commented to me how lovely it was to hear the children singing. Perhaps it was the venue, but they really did sound like angels that morning!" Joanna Keogh with Evie (3) & Darragh (1), Song Box outing to York St Mary Contemporary Art Gallery 2008.
Our core values of “supporting personal development, community cohesion and cultural inclusion through music” have led to many enduring local partnerships. Thea is proud to have provided creative outreach and inclusion in partnership with York Museums Trust, YUMI (York Unifying Multicultural Initiative), St Nicholas Fields Environment Centre, City of York Council, military families based in North Yorkshire and many others.
As Thea's interests and expertise continue to grow, we have added Senior Song Box to our services. Still working through the power of shared music-making, Senior Song Box provides adult “friendship groups with a musical twist” in the community, and interactive musical sessions for older people living in residential settings. Thea is developing particular skills working with people living in mental health and advanced dementia care settings. "I think the work you do is really quite wonderful. It is perfectly clear that you are unlocking residents’ minds and providing them with great pleasure." David Cole, visitor to Dementia with nursing unit, July 2014
The next step in the Song Box journey? Combined Song Box and Senior Song Box events. We describe our early years sessions as “playing the way families play naturally at home, all together and each at their own level”. It's time we put more generations into that picture. Join us and enjoy the fun! You'll make friends for life.
