The Swan is a thriving hub of the Bishy Road community occupying a prominent position on the corner of Bishopgate Street and Clementhorpe. It is the first business you'll see when approaching the area from the city centre and is quite simply one of the finest pubs in the whole of York.

Winner of CAMRA's coveted regional Pub of the Year award in 2009, The Swan is a classic street corner local featuring a beautiful, unspoilt 1930s interior which has earned it a rare place on CAMRA's National Inventory of Historic Pubs. Formerly owned by Tetley's (which is still served) the pub still proudly displays the plaque declaring its status as a Tetley Heritage Inn.

The landlord is local resident Paul Crossman, who owns the business along with wife Sarah. They employ a superb full-time manager in Kerry Brown who is virtually always to be found on site (along with her lovely golden retriever Finlay) making sure that the beers are kept in tip top condition and that the ambience is always relaxed and friendly. This is a pub where you can always expect a warm welcome from the excellent staff, and where, crucially, you are always guaranteed a perfect pint.

Which brings us to the beer...!

You will find six hand pulled cask ales on the bar. These always include the following three great Yorkshire brews:

Timothy Taylor's Landlord ( 4.3%) We are famous for serving a great pint of this classic strong pale ale brewed in Keighley. It is a superb full-flavoured amber beer which has won more awards nationally than any other beer.

Copper Dragon Golden Pippin (3.9%) This delicious and refreshing blonde ale from Skipton has rapidly become a firm favourite on our bar, and has even succeeded in tempting many lager drinkers in the direction of the hand pumps!

Tetley's Cask (3.7%) The Swan was once a Tetley’s house, and this amber-coloured session ale is still very popular here. An enduring Yorkshire institution (for now at least, pending the dreaded closure of the Leeds brewery in the next year or two).

Plus there are always three more guest ales which are very often sourced from our region's vast array of wonderful microbreweries, and unusually, there are also two hand pulled real ciders, Broadoak Perry is always on plus a changing guest cider.

Lager fans can enjoy Kronenberg 1664, Becks Vier, Carling and Carlsberg and you'll also find delicious Thatchers Gold Cider and of course perennial favourite Guinness. The well stocked fridges contain an interesting array of bottled drinks, the shelves behind the bar are stocked up with a range of great spirits (including some excellent single malt whiskies) and the pub also features a unique range of fine artisan wines.

To the rear of the building is a charming beer garden which is very popular in the summer, and which includes a very comfortable (and well used!) covered and heated smoking area.

At 9.30 every Wednesday night you can enjoy our highly entertaining quiz. It is popular so arrive early for a table!

Note: The Swan is a family friendly pub which welcomes children until 8pm. Well behaved dogs (on a lead) are also very welcome.
